Here is what is known about the Michigan Historical Museum: Over an entire century ago, people in Michigan began collecting things, to make sure that everyone would remember Michigan’s history. They then formed the Pioneer Society of the State of Michigan on April 22, 1874. The Pioneer Society received money from the state of Michigan, and from its yearly member dues. In 1879, this collection was put on the fourth floor of Michigan’s State Capitol. This floor was then known as the Pioneer Museum. The Pioneer Society then agreed to change their name to the Michigan Pioneer and Historical Society. In 1897, Hazen Pingree (the governor) stopped paying the organization, but it was still able to operate. By 1913, the Michigan Pioneer and Historical Society’s collections, and the number of people who came to see them, had both grown quite a bit.
Even today you can come and see the Michigan Historical Museum!
